Holy Cross Day

Although the story of our salvation doesn’t end with the cross, we need to remember its important place. This is why the cross is such an important reminder of what Jesus did for us. As the collect used today says: Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross that he might draw the whole world to himself: Mercifully grant that we, who glory in the mystery of our redemption, may have grace to take up our cross and follow him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. (BCP)

This celebration has its origins in a pilgrimage in 326 that St. Helena took to Jerusalem. According to legend, she discovered the True Cross and built what is now the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the site. When the construction finished 9 years later, the cross was placed in the church on September 14, leading to the feast we celebrate today.

Interesting customs:

  • Red is the liturgical color used for vestments and altar hangings
  • When the date falls on a Sunday, the readings for the feast are used
  • Feast day for The Companions of the Cross, Congregation of the Holy Cross, and Order of the Holy Cross
