One of Life’s Blessings and Curses

1 Timothy 6:6-19

Money is a mixed blessing. Obviously, we can’t get by in this world without it. Yet, it often seems like money or the desire to have more of it drives people to do terrible things. From influential people who abuse their power to criminals who commit robbery to people who gamble away their savings, there is plenty of evidence of abuse.

We live in a world that possibly places too much value on personal wealth. It’s one thing to be unhappy because you’re out of work or aren’t sure of when the car will get fixed. It’s another to constantly envy what others have and allow that envy to take control. This was probably just as much of a problem in the apostolic era as it is today.

Maybe the key is remembering that everything we have is ultimately a gift from God. When we let go of the “Gimmee, it’s mine!” aspect of things, it’s easier to keep everything in its proper perspective.  Don’t be ashamed of what God has given you, materially or otherwise, but do use it for God’s honor and glory.
