Putting the New Commandment Into Practice

John 13:31 – 55 has got to be one of the most difficult parts of Scripture for many people to easily “digest”, so to speak. Loving one another as Jesus does doesn’t come easily. We might be left wondering why we need to “love” someone who isn’t even easily likable. Every family, workplace and congregation has at least one person who has the ability to test others’ ability to love.  What’s a Christian to do?

  • Pray that you will be allowed to see such people as God does. When you see them as fallen, broken people in need of restoration, it gives you better perspective. We’re all on equal grounds at the foot of the Cross.
  • Don’t try to read things into what they say or do. It’s easy to play guessing games about another’s motives. We can’t know or see all things that might be at work.
  • Avoid getting drawn into self-created “dramas”. Remember that God expects our best and that we shouldn’t use somebody else’s meanspiritedness as an excuse. Don’t allow their problem to become yours.
