Book Studies, Especially During Lent

Many parishes will be having discussions on different Christian books during Lent. While Bible studies and other forms of Christian education are an important part of congregational life, Lenten studies are often important to many peoples’ Christian life. This season gives us all an ideal chance to reflect on things, and, possibly take up a new direction.

One of the things that I’ve found helpful about book studies in general is that they often provide an incentive for people to delve deeper into studying Scripture. There are numerous things that we can learn or rediscover each time we read the Bible. For example, one study on Mere Christianity encouraged me to go over the basics of the Christian faith once again.

When I’m reading Christian books, I often find it helpful to jot down references to Bible passages that the author uses. Sometimes this helps give me a new meaning to a passage. It can also make me think, “Hey wait a minute, I think he/she’s missing the point”. No opportunity to study what we believe in and why is a missed one, IMO.
