God’s Work Evidenced in Us

1 Corinthians 1:3-9

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve never been surprised that this passage is often used on greeting cards for ministry appreciation or encouragement. This is one of the most uplifting, encouraging verses for Christians that appears in the Scriptures. Paul’s letter not only uplifts his fellow Christians, but speaks of all the things that God has gifted them with.

The Corinthian church, as we see in both of Paul’s letters to them, was very gifted.  Prophecy, tongues, and other spiritual gifts were practiced in abundance. However, what truly makes the difference is their responsiveness to God’s grace. That grace, and not the individual gifts we exercise, are what saves us.

Paul’s word of encouragement to the Corinthian church is relevant in our day.  We may sometimes feel as though too much depends on ourselves. The strength that we receive to persevere in our faith comes from God Himself. He remains solidly faithful to us, and we can trust Him no matter how bad things may get.
