Leaving It to God

Romans 12:9-21

In this letter to the Romans, Paul is really offering some good, solid advice for his fellow Christians.  Maybe if we were to take these words to mind more often, we would have fewer problems as a Church.  After all, he was addressing an early community that was facing uncertain times, much as we are in our day. One of the most timely pieces of advice concerns how to cope with those who have wronged us. Left unchecked, an unresolved hurt can fester like an infected wound.

I’ve been there, done that, and gotten the T-shirt.  For years, I was subjected to a hateful, vengeful person who wished myself and my mother ill.  Even worse, we were subjected to this person’s toxic behavior due to a family member who wasn’t willing to leave the past in the past. I’ve only had some resolution to the situation because the person responsible has since moved far away.

I’ve found Paul’s advice to be helpful in the recovery process.  Try to live at peace with people who hurt you.  This doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to their behavior.  Instead, don’t go looking to start needless conflicts with them.  Most importantly, don’t attempt to take matters into your own hands or seek to constantly find a way to “trap them up”.  Doing any of these  things will only hinder your healing and impair your standing with God.

Leave the vengeance to the One whose hands it belongs in.
